Pencilled in doing my Mk2 wheel alignment on Sunday (hopefully if it's not raining!). Just wondering if anyone on here has done it and if you had any pictures?. I'm mulling over making a pair of beams to bolt to front and back of the Golf to run the string rather than using axle stands to make the square. I have an angle finder and home made wheel brace for camber adjustment. I did my GTO a long while back and that turned out ok. Any input welcome.
Definitely make beams, at least you can roll and bounce the car after adjustment. I've done it on several cars, it really works well. Assuming you set it up correctly....
There's no fun in that for me. I like to have a go at everything really, more for the satisfaction of doing it rather than the money side of things. Once I've made the beams it will be a quick job to use them next time
I watch3d this being done on my old Porsche as part of an all day geo setup. It does work well but it is a lot of faff. However, I’m never convinced wheel and tyre places ever get it right, they didn’t even know how to do it on our golf as it had the 1.3 non adjustable track rod. I had to explain to them!!
I did it years back on my Mitsubishi GTO and it handled great afterwards. Have had various cars done in the past and had to re-adjust the tie rods on a few as wheel wasn't straight.. The Golf has a new rack so first job is centering the rack and going from there. Camber should be correct but we will see..
Kwik fit and the like are never going to get it right for a drive in and out job, imagine most of the guys working there have never even seen a MK2 let alone done an alignment on one. I take mine to B Smart in Leeds, guy who owns it lives and breaths older cars (check out his supercharged MK2 VR6) so he defo doesn't need anyone to explain a mK2 track rod
It should technically be where I set it last time but will be checking all of it. If rear beam is out I believe you can buy tapered shim plates to correct it?, saying that I'm sure it was fine but you can never tell without measuring..
I centred the rack on Monday and my lad helped with a rough string alignment to get front wheels straight. I'm Epoxy Priming the inside floor so I can get seats back in for weekend hopefully then I can cast an eye over making the alignment bars.
