Stripped head bolt thread repair

    Anyone know where i can get an m11 timesert to repair stripped headbolt thread in block?
    Apparently time sert will do the job, but cant find a garage with M11 tooling to do it!?

    deemon tweeks sell the kits but not sure what size they go up to.

    Thanks for the replies!

    Would like to avoid buying the time sert kit.
    Do you rekon the Heli's will stand up to the torque???

    Ideally would like to find a garage that would do it. Think Toyota's, Honda's also have M11 head bolts?!
    Any thoughts??

    Should be no problem standing up to the torque. The helicoil in the block is larger dia. than the original bolt, so pressure on the new CI block threads is less. The helicoil material is smoother so friction will be less. Helicoil material is stronger than CI. As helicoils are stainless steel, so galling may be a problem, so lube the thread with gear oil, or similar. Just be careful ensuring that the drill, then the taps are 100% vertical when using them. Use a centre in a drill press!

    Did a check on E**A. Recons, M11 x 1.5p. Check your bolts to be sure.

    Look like heli is the way forward then.
    Anyone know of anyone else that has had to do this?

    When the bolts stretch do they stretch along the whole length of the bolt? Reason i ask is if the insert isn't the same length as the original thread will this cause a problem?

    Yeah EG lump has 11 x 1.5mm bolts.

    Also...Best place to get decent head bolts? I have heard autofactor type aren't worth using!
    Ive ordered them before, but cost about 70 delivered!

    The thread does not stretch, just the shank. I always use GSF for head sets, bolts etc - not had any problems, used some cheap motor factor ones on a 20v and the head rounded on one!

    16v head bolts are stretch bolts, but I don't think 8v are. I've got an old set that have 10.9 stamped on the tops - high tensile, non stretchy.

    is that not only very early mk1 that have them
    both my 82 mk1 and 87 mk2 8v both had stretch bolts

    i will have a look into it

    Think they are stretchers on eg!?

    Any other opinions on head bolts to use? Fairly high comp ratio- 11.5:1!
    And just to triple check; 40nm, 60nm then 180deg?

    Mk2 head bolts, both 16v and 8v, are definitely stretch (yield) bolts! 8v more so than 16v, as they are shorter.
    Use gear oil on the threads and Rocal "ASP" (Anti-Scuffing Paste) on washer and under head of the bolt, for the best results.

    There is obviously some inaccurate information printed in non VAG manuals!

    Mushy, were early Mk1s torque only, then re-torque after 1000miles? This is the old method before torque + turn. I think Mk2 diesels still did the torque and re-torque?

    Is that process 100% for m11 bolts on EG 8v 1982 1600 gti don't mean to question it but heard/read so many differing answers.

    Yeah, there is a lot of inaccurate information out there, from not VAG sources. I've been tripped up so many times recently, it hurts.

    If anyone has a genuine OE Mk1 Manual, or OE Mk2 Manual, then why not post photographs/scans, of the actual the figures for all of the important engine bolts? Plus, a copy of all relevant VW Tech Data Sheets, is really required, to be sure that they have not change their minds.

    How long are the bolts? From E**A! (Which is also not always accurate!). The EV bolts are 96mm from under head, to tip of thread. The KR/PL 16v are 142mm.

    Just checked E**A.
    049 103 384 B, (M11 x 1.5p x 96 L), is used on EG, EV, PB and PG.

    So, from the fact that no one with an OE Manual has commented otherwise, then:
    40 Nm + 60 Nm + 90 deg + 90 deg is, possibly, correct.

    1992 Scirocco with a DX engine. 10.9 grade head bolts - probably original VAG.

    from this is from the mk1 HAYNES manual scirocco1974 to82/golf 1974to84/convertible 1980to85
    4 TYPE OF BOLTS are used according to type and power
    you are only likely to see two of them on a gti

    in the main part of the manual
    cylinder head bolts two types

    10mm socket head
    stage1...................47 ibf ft or 65 Nm
    stage2...................tighten futher 1/4 turn

    12mm socket head
    stage1..................29 ibf ft or 40 Nm
    stage2..................44 ibf ft or 60 Nm
    stage3..................55 ibf ft or 75 Nm
    stage4..................tighten futher 1/4 turn

    then in the supplement for later models you get

    cylinder head bolts two types

    M10-12 pointed socket head bolts
    stage1.................29 ibf ft or 40 Nm
    stage2.................40 ibf ft or 55 Nm
    stage3.................47 ibf ft or 65 Nm
    stage4.................tighten futher 1/4 turn

    M11-12 pointed socket head bolts
    stage1.................29 ibf ft or 40 Nm
    stage2.................44 ibf ft or 60 Nm
    stage3.................tighten futher 1/2 turn

    yes the last one is the same as the mk2 8v and 16v gti


    why wouldnt you thingk it was a stretch or yield bolts
    i would hope a head bolt would be at least that grade
    none of the vw head stretch or yield bolts have a waisted shanks
