Sunroof delete, can I pop rivet aluminium sheet over it?

I need to lose the sunroof on my MK2 golf, I was thinking about ripping the original out the just pop riveting a sheet of aluminium over the hole, I'd obviously put some kind of sealant in between the roof and the panel. Then maybe use some carbon wrap over the top of it to tidy it up.

Would this be O.K to do, and does anyone know what thickness I should be aiming for?

This is going to be a fully stripped out track car, so function and cost are more important than looks at the moment.

If you never intend to race it officially, you can do what you want.

For reference, the Golf GTI racers require steel plate to be riveted, 18 or 20swg, which is 0.914mm to 1.219mm thick.

Great, thanks. Just sorted a panel from a local firm, getting it done in 1.2mm as you never know.

One last thing, does anyone know if there is a minimum/maximum amount the plate must overlap the hole in the roof by, (the area for riveting)

    It doesn't specify.

Inch and a half to 2 inches should do it?
