There should be a code on the bottom of the bellhousing. The first part of that is the gearbox code, which will tell you what gear set is in it.

A red drive is a 3.67 FD, which is what I'd expect it to have, if it was originally a 1.8. The Economy boxes have taller gears, especially at the top end, compared to the GTI boxes - about 20% taller geared in 5th.

If you want torque, economy and tall gearing, throw in a turbo diesel.

That's already been thought of, and after years of diesel driving. I fancy a petrol more.
Torque isn't the all and end all. I just don't want to rag it to 3k just to inch forward in traffic, but then again, round here, it's mainly Aroads.

If you really want to make it horrible to drive, try a real tall gearbox and a set of 18's

Torque is everything and that is why some members are suggesting a change in overall gearing, based on what you want to do.

Yeh I've thought about fitting a 2.0 8v. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea.
The extra torque wouldn't go a miss.

Don't do it... you'll spend a load of money, and end up with a slower car than before.
