A mate is looking for more torque , but standard underbonnet looks for his 'Rocco , and can get a TDI crank handy.... What is involved in fitting one of these to the venerable 8v Gti engine? What rods , pistons , bearing shells etc are required? I know its a heavy old crank , but we have access to top quality machining facilities to lighten and balance it.

just fit a standard 1900 diesel crank. then you'll have to get the top of the pistons machined as the stroke is longer so to advoid the pistons hitting the head.also watch the clearence between the big end shells and the block next to the oil pump.

i have fitted this crank in the past to a 2 liter agg to make 2042 cc engine. so you might consider fitting a 2 liter block while the engine is out.

Do you need to machine the pistons in a 2.0l?

yes as more stroke down wards meens the same upwards unless you want to offset the crank.
