Smudge asked me about Maestro 4.25 final drives prior to installing with a Quaife recently, and pointed me to a couple of eBay auctions, but I was unable to confirm whether they would or wouldn't have the desired 4.25 final drive inside them.

Does anyone know the Maestro gearbox codes which had this final drive in?

I've never seen it stated. I've scribbled notes about what it might have been, but nothing I'd rely on. Not that there's going to be many Maestros left...

Various notes I've made over the years, which may or may not be correct:

    - 5-speed 1.3
    - 1990 5-speed 1.3
    - 6Y coded?
    - 6S per the Maestro Haynes manual
    - internal ratios are different on Maestro to VW

[:-B] There are several different Maestro 020 5 speed gearboxes used.

The early cars up to around 1984 had the base model 1.3 and 1.3L vehicles using a 4.17 FD with the non GTI tall gear ratios (0.71 5th)
The 1.3HLE, 1.6L, 1.6HLS and Vanden Plas models used a 3.89 FD along with the same tall gear ratio cluster.
The MG1600 used a 3.66 FD and the close ratio GTI style gear cluster, interestingly with a 0.91 5th and not the 0.89.

Then from approx 1984 this changed.

1.3, 1.3L, 1.3HL and 1.3 VAN 500CWT got the 4.25 FD and tall ratio gear cluster.
    1.3 VAN 700CWT got the 4.6 FD
1.6 VAN 500CWT and 700CWT got the choice of 4.25 or 3.94 FDs.
    1.3HLE, 1.6L, 1.6HL, 1.6HLS and Vanden Plas models got the 3.94.
MG1600 got the 3.66 with GTI ratios.

    But 6S is a 4.25 FD gearbox code. 6R is a 3.94.

Seat Vans had an AVX coded gearbox that was also a 4.25 FD.

Why do I still know all this......[8-}]

No Maestro info here but I got the 4.25 from VW as an AVX box code FD. Caddy Diesel from memory.

    Edit: Danny already posted that...

I'm a bit like you Chris, In that i've scribbled down notes over the years!
    My notes say -
    6Y has a 4.25 FD - from a 1.3 Maestro

AVX has a 4.25 FD - from a Diesel van

    AWY has a 4.25 FD - from a Mk2 Golf/Jetta Diesel

Most of which has been said above.

    Think I've got a 6y meastro box.
Currently running a 1.6 gti box FD code in my mk1 abf, can I simply fit the meastro box(are the ratios any good)or do I need to fit the final drive into my existing box?

Ideally you need to use the 4.25 FD with the FD gear set mate

Cool, anyone recommend a garge in the Bracknell area up to the job?
Also is the FD the best box to rebuild or maybe use another 2nd hand box?
    Thanks

You need to decide the ratios you want. And choose an appropriate box that has them.
