At the mo I have a mk1 golf with 1.9 16v conversion and a 1977 Scirocco mk1 locked up in the garage (with MOT), the situation is that the MOT is due on the Golf and I know it's going to fail on rust, so ideally it needs to be restored. So it's either drive round in the Scirocco although I don't think it's really a daily driver car and to be honest I wouldn't mind a bit more comfort. After looking at both VAG and non VAG cars the only car that appeals to me is a Rado. I want to know would I be disappointed with the performance of a 16v Corrado?? G60 and VR6 is out of the question due to running costs. So that leaves me with either getting a 1.8 16v or 2.0 16v with KR cms added. What you all reckon?? What should I be paying for a decent spec rado, preferably dark metallic paint and dark interior??
I've had a 16V and VR6, had a couple earlier this year I sold because I didn't have time ti fix them up. One thing that struck me just sitting in them was how "heavy" they felt compared to my MK2 Scirocco I had at the time. I drove one about a bit and having had nothing more exciting than a 1.6 Polo for a few years since the VR6 it felt really quick. I think one will feel slow put against the MK1 simply because of the weight difference. Have a look on the Corrado Forum as there are some very cheap ones on there at the minute. Think the prices have been driven down a bit from what they were.
Personally I would only bother parting with money for the G60 or the VR6, but as you pointed out, the running cost is high. id rather have a 16v mk2 golf than a 16v rado.
Im saying nowt Nah,they are a good motor to drive imo. And also imo the 16v is a better daily driver than the G60,the gearing in the G60 is horrible and the valvers do wind up alright.Even better if they dont need a cat convertor... The G60 asks you to boot it everywhere with the low down torque, whereas the valver is a bit more refined as a daily driver. They do have a few common problems...But there's plenty bits knocking around on the forums etc. Neil.
also dont forget about g60 servicing costs. i got my audi on ebay at the moment and thinking about maybe getting a rado when it sells but not sure. i would be split between the vr6 or 16v..
Don't the Rados have a particulary numb 16V in them? Lower output than the others? I have driven a couple and thought they had something wrong with them but it was suggested to me they don't have the same output as a 16V Mk2 whereas i assumed they would be the same at the point I drove them. I was disapointed with them vs my 8V Mk2, they will be truly unbearable vs your 1.9 16V Mk1 Stay with 16V and Golf Mk2 if you must buy another car Thought you'd be low flying the Mk1 with the new springs on??!!
Aye,136 brake rather than the 139 of the 16v mk2. 2.0 16v is the same power but with more torque. That said, the valver can go alright with a few tweaks. Neil.
Gone from mk2 rocco to 1.8 16v raddo as winter car. First off, tall. Feels like sitting in a transit van after a rocco. Second erm, comfy Third 35mpg on motorways Fourth heavy Fifth really really big turning circle, difference between rocco and raddo would be about 1 parking space if you turned and reversed in. That's about it really, bit of go to them nowt to write home about but still get you pulling away from the average mondeo man.
a 2.0l 16v (9a) does have slightly less power than the 1.8 (kr) to start with but this is down to the CAT and the lame cams that VW put in it. If you get a pre 93 car you can didtch the CAT and get hold of some KR cams and realistically you should be looking at nearer 150bhp ish and plenty more torque than a 1.8 which really makes the difference!
I think they feel slower than they actually are. As a daily driver it will be a much nicer car than a Mk1, and I prefer it to a Mk2 too. I've owned both MK1 and Mk2 Golfs before this. I can just keep with a 180bhp Seat Leon Cupra in mine, which has 162bhp & 152Ibft. Have a look at www.the-corrado.net
There is also a fault with the wing mirrors which causes a whistling noise at high speed where the air is trapped between the chasis and the mirrors.
This is it: 90,000 miles FSH. very nice clean car, needs a little TLC but a bargain for 1200 Pick it up wednesday
yeah was on the corrado forum, the guy then put it on eBay. went to see it yesterday and in fairness I think this is going to be a cracking car. Maybe nmot as fast my Golf but comfort wise I think this is a very good car.
Well done, looks like you did well there. Welcome to Corrado ownership. I'll PM what I was going to send in a minute!
