After some time away after selling my R32 swapped Mk2 project (Link in my sig by the way..), I'm now back in the Mk2 world with my absolute dream car, a Golf Rallye with an R36 motor in it. I'd found the car by chance, spotting an ad on Facebook for a Golf country then I asked what else the owner had. This car and a bunch of other mad stuff came up in discussion and I had to go over and see it. Once I'd seen it a few times, checked everything I could and test drove the car; I was ready to pull the trigger. It's a tasty car, a few highlights include: Basically fully refreshed suspension, polybushes, KW V3s. The R36 motor up front, a proper 300bhp+ variant of the 3.6 VR. A custom built stainless exhaust system, very well made and not droney at all. Mk3 VR6 Syncro running gear and gearbox. 16 inch BBS RSs. Digifiz clocks. Non sunroof model, being a Spanish import which is apparently a somewhat 'common' feature from there. And more! It's a bit of a 'light' project that I'll finish off and put my stamp on it, hopefully as before I'll document my progress here. Space here to list what needs to be done. Anyway here's the story so far: I got the car home and the first job was to fit a new steering wheel to replace horrible replica Sparco one, I went for a MoMo MonteCarlo with red accents: The next day spent around 10 hours cleaning, decontaminating, polishing and then waxing it... ready for a local show the next day. Here's some pics from the day: The flap for the rear bumper is in the boot by the way. I need to fix a broken plastic lug on it and don't fancy it flying off! I'd discovered as soon as I'd parked it on my drive after taking it home that the passenger door didn't lock.. so I removed the doorcard and inspected. It looked like the plastic bush on the end of the push pin mechanism was knackered and I couldn't fix it. I've ordered the part and @cupracraig (who couldn't wait to see it) managed to force the mechanism locked for now. I decided whilst I wait for the part and new membranes, I'd varnish the doorcards and give them a thorough clean. They were surprisingly disgusting. Here's a few after pics: Since the show, I also managed to get my hands on a set of B Star Sebrings. I want to go for an OEM+ look on the exterior so thought these would be a smart choice. For tyres, I went for Michelin Pilotsport 3s. I went for a staggered offset set-up, so ET38 on the front and ET25 on the back; plenty of opportunity to run some spacers if I feel like it. Before fitting, I decided to address some rubbing that had occurred on the arches. Unfortunately I'll need to get the outer bits painted at some point, but I treated the inside with Bilt hamber Electrox, some paint and some Bilt hamber UB. Also had a spray about with some BH Atom-mac for good measure. Some pics from fitting and fettling: Plenty more planned to do and parts on the way. Will do my best to update as I make more progress.
I agree, reasearched those new wheels and had no idea they were around, really look great in 16'' real good choice. Car must be a beast without the traction problems of 2WD with that engine which IMO is a excellent upgrade as pretty hard to get 300bhp from a G60 ?. Stunning car well done ,cheers.
That is a lovely looking car. Assuming the the R36 FSI engine still retains FSI and a MED9.1.3 ECU in that shell, it should pull much more stronger than a standard or tuned 320 to 350 NM 3.2 PFI engine. Those late 03H EA390 engines, achieve standard Golf 7 R torque at up to 400 Nm in standard form. Uneventful tuned in a in a 1700 kg Passat, but will be more alive in a 1200 kg Rallye Golf 2. Good luck with it. Hope to see it in the steel at a show one day.
Hah, I wouldn't say no to this. Perhaps a supercharger? To give a brief update after a long period of inactivity, the Rallye is having an absolute overhaul at the minute with lots and lots of tidying, fixes and parts being thrown at it. Hopefully very soon, I'll give everyone a comprehensive update. But going over the car has revealed that it's very solid, which is naturally what we all want to hear when we go digging! Pictures and updates coming soon!
