After my recent trackday at Llandow this weekend, my G60 top mounts have well and truly had it. They were genuine items and seemed to cope okay for the amount of miles they covered, but it's definitely an area that needs improving and with them needing replacing it seems the ideal opportunity. I've read quite a bit about Mk3 items being an improvement, but I'm guessing that they'll still be flawed when it comes to track use. The other option that I've seen are the Compbrake type adjustable solid top mounts. Has anyone had any experience running either of these on track and on the road? Are there any other choices I should be looking at? The Compbrake items are around 130 which is at the top of the budget really.
Mk3 top mounts for me. I've converted several track cars to them in the past and not heard of problems with any of them. It is just a much better design imo. Spherical bearing top mounts on a road car may be a little over kill.
Although I do use the car on the road at the moment, it is going to be a dedicated track car so I'm not too worried about a harsh ride. That's not to rule out the Mk3 top mounts if the general consensus is they are more than up to the job on track, but I don't want to have to replace them in the near future, I'd like to be at the point where I'm fitting parts that will be on there for a while.
They are well & trully knacked! I use mk3 ones which are great (unlike my brand new rear engine mount, only lasting 100 miles) I have a full mk3 conversion spare if you are stuck! not brand new but its got everything you need in the right order & will work 100% better than your mounts fitted right now Pic here; 14.00 posted if you want them (sorry to whore my spares & mods feel free to remove if you want) Reality is that all mk2 top mounts are tosh, even G60 items and have been known to fail an MOT when brand new. Mk3 versions are all i would bother to fit.
I can't say I have ever heard of a mk3 top mount failing like the mk2 ones do. Yep the actual bearings can get dry, but they are easily stripped down, washed in solvent, then re-greased. But the rubber section itself is not something that will break easily. They were designed to hold up a VR6 after all!
Tried mk3 long ago just don't fit right to much play/movement was felt after fitting them in my 20v mk2 golf, Bonrath top mounts kept the steering geometry tight with better feedback and control Either go for mk2 golf SKF ones from euro or buy oe vag. Best I have found and still use is uprated Bonrath top mounts whick come with uprated bearings and bushed top plates
Lemforder Mk3 top mounts for me. I've run them for 2 full seasons of racing with no issues & had plenty of Podium finishes
Looks like Mk3 items it is then! I think I was riding the kerbs a bit too much at the weekend! I'll PM you about the top mounts.
Can you still buy Bonrath top mounts? I remember seeing Bonrath stuff everywhere in the late 90s early 2000s but haven't seen anything lately.
