right, just done my bottom end swap at the weekend with the aid of my mate.
Now the car wont fire up. It turns over, but that is where it ends...

now, the alarm , etc works fine, so might not be the battery. That is on charge at the moment, but if its not that, what could it be.
The plugs havebeen checked. Starter motor? Alternator?

bear in mind my battery is new, but what helps the battery keep its charge. Could it be that?

Its really annoying as the hard work has been done!

    answers on a postcard please.

I'm assuming you've double checked the cam and ignition timing. and have the plug lead round the correct way.

As its an 8v you have to get the intermeadiate shaft timed as the dizzy runs off this (but I'm sure you knew that).

Also check all the vacuum pipes are tight. I had trouble starting mine after a rebuild and all it was was a loose servo pipe.

I would deffo check the distributor and timing and make sure you got a spark.

What bottom end did you use mate, MK3 2E???

Just a thought, if this is a GTi, try the module on top of the ECU, a few I've had have got wet, stopped working and gave no spark.

its actually an awg which takes a cross flow head. Found in the 2000-2002 gti cabriolets. Same tall block and casting as the 2e!

    cheers for the suggestions guys

Jus slacken the distributor nut and turn the distributor as someone cransk the engine, bet you will get it to start no bother at all that way., then fine tune the timing with the strobe.

As Andy947 says, get someone to crank it over whilst you gently twist the dizzy. I spent ages trying to find fault, pressure testing, fuel check's, spark, plugs, the lot. And it was the dizzy all along :(
