The carb body (48) is a useable size but what's more important is the size of the chokes (auxiluary venturi) fitted inside them.

You can fit 40's, 45's and 48's to the same car and each will run fine if they all have the appropriate choke size fitted.

Cheers for the reply, don't suppose anyone can recommend a good rolling road tuner. Also how much does a carb session cost these days

    Cheers

mine were 70 to get set up on the rollers.
a mate with a mk2 escort runs 48's on a vauxhall 2.0 lump, with the right chokes and jetting it ticks over perfectly and produces power fantastically, also runs an mbe ignition system(are these available for vw?)
    :)

i would say 48's are too big unless you have a bvh and cams.
