Unknown coolant leak

    could be, depends why it went! if it was due to frozen coolant then head/block could be damaged. if it overheated, most likely just gasket and warped head.

    get under the bonnet before you strip it and have a damn good look over everything. it could be a split pipe or a damaged core plug thats causing the problem

    I've bit the bullet, car went it for the head gasket today.
    Only problem, the garage said they cant see any damage, just some very slight wear on edge of gasket by one piston.
    I'll have to wait until I get the car back on the road to see if it has been cured.
    On a happy note, they did say the the engine was in very good nick.
