When did the golf gti get a usb socket for memory sticks? I recently purchased a 2015 (may registered) gti, but it does not have one.

No, its a model year change over thing. It will have the older MDI connector in the cubby in front of the gear lever because it was made prior to the model year change. This occurs in May every year. Yours was made before May so is older model year. Mine was made in August 15 and has USB, they all come with USB now not MDI, my wife's Apr16 1.4 also has USB in front cubby, its not a special order thing. Advanced phone prep adds another USB inside the armrest. Golfgtiforum.co.uk has a lot of threads on model year changeovers in the mK7 section.
Cool Aye my Leon in 2014 it only has the midi slot And looks like the facelift Leon has the usb Would probably be quite easy to retro fit depending on cost
