    Hi folks,

    I have about 9k to spend on a new car. I really fancy a Bora or Golf but Im not sure what to go for, V5 or TDI?
    I like the idea of the TDI, cheap fuel bills and oddles of torque, but the V5 is perhaps more sporty so it might be better for driving around quickly?
    I use the motorway everyday so Im looking for good overtaking performance - i.e. torque and acceleration must be good for nipping in and out of traffic on the motorway everyday!
    Im far less bothered about handing and 0-60 runs!

    I've heard modern TDIs are complex, are they less reliable than the V5?

    Any horror stories about either?

    Thanks in advance :)

    TDI, V5 seems to use lots of petrol and not be very fast at the same time

    The tdi wins over the v5 for me everytime, if your unsure have a drive in both but i can guarantee you will prefer the tdi once you have driven a v5

    9k is a nice sum to throw at a mk4 derv - should get you something up around an '03/04 plate.

    The good thing about your comparison is that tdis are more common so the chance of hearing of horror stories is more likely - and generally, I've heard of problems few beyond the usual mk4 suspects

    As for handling, don't worry, all mk4 handle like a fishing trawler.

    Thanks a lot for the replies guys.
    Yeah I've seen some nice low mileage 2004s for sale. The Jetta is over budget, so I'll be looking for a mint mk4 derv.

    You've confirmed my suspicion that a 150TDI is the one to go for. So, I will look for a GTTDI PD150 :)

    A TDI every day, ive seen a few MK4 anniversary's for the top end of 9K Millage isnt really an issue on them and with a chip there a lot quicker than a V5 and the power is more usable. I drove a chipped mk4 the other day and thought it was quicker than my bro's 1.8T with 190bhp.

    Also a mate picked up a Mk5 2.016v gt tdi 04 plate on 89k fully loaded full leather matalic paint etc book price of 26k when new with all the optional extes for 9800 and its mint

    Not so sure it is though.

    Same car, local to me, with 65k has asking price of 10,300 - which could easily be haggled to 9800.

    It's the spec level, such as mine has.

    Contact a dealer to see exactly whats included.

    Yes

    On the same line as the spec (rhs) will be the power output - expressed in KW however.

    So:
    115=85kw
    130= 96kw
    150=111KW

    Belt intervals are 40k and 60k

    It should be simple, but its not, so different engines have different intervals

    What sort of servicing info you after?

    I think just the belt change and oil change
    I guess it'll all be in the documentation with the car anyway?, just wanted to know if any of these cars needed it done immediately.

    Thanks again for the info
