Ok so I've gone and bought a coms lead for the car and downloaded vcds-lite so I have everything need. But my laptop is not recognising the coms lead. Now the lead came with some software and it loaded as VAGCOM release 409-1. Is this all I need for this? or do I need some magic. All comments welcome.

There should be a document on the provided software that tells you how to install the lead.

For mine I seem to recall you have to change the COM port settings for it to work, this also has to be done in the car with the ignition on.

Its usb. The download from Rosstech gives 4 coms ports but no usb connection with there software.
There are instructions on this but it is for XP, no mention of Vista. Firewall may be a factor now that you mention it.

Vista should be roughly the same as with XP.

It's usb but acts as a virtual com port. You need to go into device manager find the lead and set it to a port from com1 to com4. Then select the same one on vag-com.

In the seetings it should have a usb selection. Although you may need another version of vag com.

it depends on the lead you get, most of them will install a virtual com port then as above you open device manager and check which one it is. if the number is higher than 4 you have to manually change it. if 1-4 are used you have to go into one of them and move it to a higher number, then move virtual com into its spot. simple

there are cables which are 'proper' usb and so work with usb version of vag-com, but you dont really see them as making the virtual com port cable is much cheaper and easier for all the child slave labourers in hong kong.

if you have cheapo one you need vag-com 409.1 or vcds lite. the more expensive cables work on the newer versions, the reason they cost more is licence is built into cable rather than the software. the cheap one is fine for mk3 and some mk4, it only does kline not CANBUS, though afaik all mk4 ecu use kline even on the CANBUS equipped models?

even if its the wrong one for the car it should still be able to see the cable. note you cant set the com port unless the cable is plugged in with the ignition on, as vag-com needs to see a response from the car before it will allow you to save the changes :)
