Very hot engine

    Hi all... I am looking for answers please i am starting my rebuild/restoration project reg mk1 cabriolet i have got the donor 2.0 lump and 1.8 gti head working and running all be it a tad lumpy it has been well flushed a new thermostat. Water pump is working well good return but running on idle after literally 2 mins all the pipes and radiator are way too hot to hold the fan is cutting in the temp guage is between 1/2 and 3/4 the light works but doesn't come on. The bulkhead and drivers side wing get hot to i touch also[:s] thanks for any help you can be.

    Could the timing be way retarded?

    Sorry i have been away . Timing is still to 6degrees before tdc no idea what the dizzy in the car is how do i find out ?

    are there any part numbers on it visible, VW part number would be easiest for me to track down. also what management is it running on :)
