I wonder if you can tell me if these engines are reliable assuming they have been serviced at the correct intervals etc. How many miles will they do before they need to be rebuilt?

What should you look out for with them?

Looking at MK3 VR6's and wondering whether I'm in for hefty bills.

I've had a couple that were over 100k and were both fine, the mk3 did 194.5bhp at Stealth with 129,000miles

I'd donate my left testicle for one....had a 98 gti. had to lose the car because i lost my job...thank YOU bush. It was fast, and I never had any bit of problems with it, except dealer sold to me with blown head gasket. After that was all worked out, ran like a champ

The 2.8's go forever if properly serviced. 2.9's can suffer from
bore wear (initially on cylinders 1 & 6), I've heard this is down to
using too thin oil from new! Timing chains, & more importantly
the tensioners & guide rails should be replaced around the
100k mark as alby says. Valve stem oil seals do wear too, but
you'll notice blue smoke though, if it is burning.

    HTH,
    Robbo
