Just wondered if anyone had had their VR6 converted to run on LPG and what their thoughts were. Was thinkin of gettin my Vento converted to save on the cost of running at 25mpg! Cheers, Dan.

Spoke to a conversion specialist up in Scotland about 6 months ago and he was less then keen on doing a VR6 having had major problems with one done in the past.

Other things worth thinking about are that running on LPG will show up any problems with your engine that you would not notice when running on petrol.
Also its very likely that the government will put tax onto LPG in the next couple of years so it would no longer be cheaper to run on it

i have a mk1 16v running on lpg and it is mint, no loss in performance and i do 210 miles on 10 gas! where i got mine converted they were doing a vr6 pasat at the time and it was very hard to set up, they had problems with idle and pickup because of the difference in the length of the inlet manifold runners on each 'side' of the engine. but they did get it sorted in the end and the guy who had the car was very happy with it.
send me an e-mail and i will give you the contact details of the garage where i got mine done. (rmfisher@amazon.shu.ac.uk)
dont be put off having the conversion done tho cos it is well worth it!

    OLD thread

I had a golf country on LPG. had a kit to convert a VR6 but never kept the corrado vr as i hated it.

my mates got a vento vr6 on it and it runs mint and costs sod all to run.

my van is going for LPG very soon.

    It's a 1.8 carb engine

I'm going to Gasure in Chester for my conversion. Specialises in VW vans and is reasonable priced. Does closed and open loop convesions.
They convert carbed and Fuel injected engines as found on the T25, T4's and T5's so I dont see any reason why they couldn't manage on a Golf. I basically have the same engine as Mk1 / Mk 2 Golf.

Worth giving them a shout i suppose.

    here's my take.

Bear in mind I fall in the silly mileage bracket working 250 miles from home during the week. So Friday and Sunday evenings are basically spent on the road. [xx(]

My sums show that my van running at 30 mpg on petrol at 92.9p per litre basically costs 14p per mile

After the conversion the mpg will drop to say 25mpg but at 52.9p per litre my costs reduce to 9.6p per mile. Basically on a 500 mile round trip I'm saving 22 in fuel. Do that enough times and it makes a difference.

The recent drop in fuel price has dented my potential saving a fair bit (petrol has reduced by much more than LPG).

I suppose there's other issues as well.

    1. The eco side
    2. the supposed engine benefits. To a degree anyway, there is some debate on valves and heads etc.
    3. No Congestion charge if driving in the Big Smoke is your thing. (I wont go near the place)

At the end of the day you have to weigh up your won situation I guess. My annual mileage warrants me driving a silly small / economical car or squeezing every drop out of the Surf bus. For someone who isn't covering the mileage it probably doesn't make financial sense.

    I've made my choice...............

my mate will sell his kit for 500, but you have to remove it. 2500 worth off kit, and it's on a vento vr6 already...
