many thanks for the response on this. It was the first time that i have been in contact with the VR so as like MK3valver it maybe the same noise you heard?!?!

What does the noise from the belt tensioners/water pumps sound like? Also how much would it be to repair them if it was them?

Ezy D - can't really explain the noise, it wasn't exactly loud/majorly noticeable! But as i don't know the VR engine too well at the moment i just needed some feedback on the noises that come from them. My first instinct was that it was normal. The car was fully serviced 4 weeks ago by the bloke i am buying it off, it was done at a VW garage in Wolves, would have though that they would have noted something if it was a problem?!?!?

vr's are reliabe but beware of expensive labour repair bills as are no where as easy to work on than a valver although bits are not to expensive. as well as belt tensioners failing listen for any top end timing chain rattle as this is a very expensive job to have done right and is quite common to get rattly when mileage gets around and over 100,000.

what is the life for the cambelt chain & tensioner. What are the signs when they do go and what are the costs for ghetting sorted. I say this as my old boy reckons the noise we heard may be related to either one of them on the way out. The car ahs 109000 on the clock!

i think you'd need to budget for the chains and tensioners to be replaced on a 100k example unless the seller has a recent receipt for the work

i have asked the seller for a check through service books etc to see what work has/has not been done to it around the 100k mark onwards.

Let you all know what happens when i hear back.

Thanks for all the help though, much appreciated.

Tensioner & Serpentine belt are easily changed. The Tensioner will cost about 70, the belt 15 or so. From what I've gathered tensioners generally need to be replaced from about 80k onwards.

Chains you can do yourself, but that depends whether you want to and have the time. Otherwise find a reputable VW specialist garage and get them to do it ...... that's if you are going to buy the car.

Have a look at the headgasket. See if there is any moisture around the join between engine block and head.

    Have a look here...

    http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161839

and see if anything looks like the picture of mine !

    Hope this helps.

I would suggest 'you' go through all the bills and services to see what has & hasn't been done. Even if it takes half an hour. Don't rely on the seller saying what has / hasn't been done. Be sceptical no matter how nice they seem !!!!! Check that the 60k service was done properly !

Also underneath have a look at .......
    • Driveshaft CV joints - see if any are torn / broken ! (if so knock 180 off the price to cover cost of replacement per driveshaft)
    • Look at tyres for even wear (could suggest tracking problems)
    • Look at rear axle bushes (difficult to do) but at that mileage they'll need replacing.
    • Also if you go to see it again, ask to see the car start with a cold engine. You'll be able to see if the exhaust gases are white / normal / black.
See other things to check here .....

Right got my final viewing on the VR Saturday morning. Cheers for all the advice, think the wurring noise is linked with the alternator. Should be a good bargaining tool.

One last thing, will my suspension from the 93 8v fit straight on? Also is there any chance the Milltek exhaust will fit on too, it was just the cat-back system?!?!

an 8v exhaust is typically 50mm, the vr6 one is 55mm. i recon yours ought to go straight on, worth a look just to check.

as for suspension, should fit, but the spring and damper rates prolly wont suit the vr6 engine weight well

I work in Service Delivery, i hope you arent browsing this forum in works time? ;) lol.

In all seriousness, park 2 spaces up from you outside of Blake 2. Noticed the white GTI had gone and that you were driving another Mk3. Stop gap?

Been a member on here since its creation and many incarnations, used to organise the Worcestershire region of CGTI, but live just down the road in Sheldon now.

this is like one of the most useful forums for VW. Helped em out so much, then unfortunately the Gti hit its last hurdle, just coughed up 200 quid at Stealth Racing to have some engine queries looked at, next day the gear box went. No point in messing round with it anymore so opting for the VR6 now!! Can't wait.

Yeah the naff 1.87cl auto is just a spare car that kicks around my parents house. Comes in use at times like this though!

    Small worls isn't it hey?

Certainly is a small world. And yeah, this forum is the best for technial help out there. So much knowledge crammed into its archives, and there musnt be a single question that hasnt been answered twice.

Havent been to Stealth for a couple of years, spent a fair amount of cash with them in the past.

Beyond my days of putting VR6s into Mk2 Golfs at the moment though. Maybe again when i can afford it and dont have to save for a wedding and other grown up responsibilities lol. Although, next time i cant be bothered getting my hands dirty, so will probably buy a project thats already been finished to a high standard.

hi mate ive got a mk3 vr6 never liked the mk3 as i love my old mk2 and my now mk1 16v they are completely different, my opinion is i bought my vr6 just before crimbo, 3k full service history 2owners 67thou on clock, leather, mint inside and out all colour coded etc, very nice car, im selling due to needing a van lol, lots more done to it to just ask,
the difference i found between the mk1/2 and mk3 are your feel the corners in the mk1/2 but in a mk3 it feels bigger and slightly heavier........but good suspension is a big help, vr6 noise and power feels awesome as its effortless when putting your foot down find the right one and you wont regret it, i get 28 to the gallon and thats with play too!
