VR6 Timing Chain

  1. Hello

I am doing a Timing chain change on an early obd1 VR6. The car has 130,000 miles and sounds reasonably fine. VW states that timing chains are lifetime parts but i was doing the work as the Head Gasket needs replacing.

I heard that its just the top chains and tensioners that suffer wear problems so I wanted to know is it possible or even recommended that you change only the top chains and tensioners?

You have to remove gearbox/clutch/fly/cover for top chain and asscoiated parts anyway, so may as well do the lot.

Nope, do the lot with a new VW clutch

Vince at Stealth charges 1550 inc head rebuild which is a bloody good price for the work involved!
