    Hi All..

Now i have my VRT up and running.. i need to concentrate on the gearbox..

I'll be getting an uprated clutch and diff but is there any other gearboxes with taller gears that i could use?

or do i take a tdi box and swap the internals? if so what box would be a straight swap?

Im running a GT35 turbo and it runs out of revs with so much more to give in that gear..

    All help be appreciated..

    Thanks

for the vr6 only boxes that are a straight fit are 5/6 cyl mk3/4 fwd boxes, so you would need to get a donor 02a/j 4 speed box and swap internals into a 5/6 cyl bellhousing to get your desired ratios:

plenty to choose from, biggest problem is deciding what you want ratio wise, once you know that its a case of trawl the list for a box that is easy to get here and has what you want or at least close to it

rubjonny can always rely on you for helpful info.. Thanks Buddy..

Any recommendations on a box to chose from? i'm currently running 400bhp but will be around 450bhp in the next year so need to plan ahead really as i only want to do it once..

I would like a final drive i think of 3.0-3.1 in 5th which should give me a good motorway cruising rpm at 70mph off boost.. the other gears i am not really sure about, as you can tell not very clued up about ratios etc

i'm thinking of that list maybe a asd would give me the best.. as it is very similar to the vr box but with a longer 5th gear..

not really clued up on that side of thing myself, the general opinion for 4 cyl turbo with big power I see is 'fit a diesel box' so the asd is probably a good start!

They are crap at multiplying axle torque. Driven them in cars with 400bhp. Kills the fun.

I have a 315bhp/300lbft car. I run the regular a 3.68 FDR and no diff. Wheelspin will only occur, if I provoke the car. Some of the trackday guys run 3.68 and 3.94 in their boosted cars with no traction issues.

    On a VR6, just leave the 3.39 FDR, With 205 50 15 tyres, 7000rpm is near 160mph on those.

I would only use a 3.125 FDR if you are drag racing the car and want to manage gearshifts during a 1/4 mile run. Road car not necessary.

    thank you for the reply..

it does 160mph at the moment.. and than the engine has so much more to give but the gearbox lets out at 160 so would like a 5th ideally capable of more, one of the main reasons really..

i know that may not be for everyone but its something i would like to change..

The 5th on those are 0.83:1. So in theory something towards a 0.75:1 will increase the mph/rpm ratio.

    hey buddy..

i think i am gonna go for the ASD code 5th gear which is a 0.717 which should give me what i'm looking for.. would have been so much easier if i could of just put a tdi box on it but wont happen being a 4cyl box :(

Same gear spacing as a VR6 12v CCM gearbox, but with a 3.94 final drive, so pretty short if used with 195/205 50 R15 wheels and tyres.

sorry i had to laugh at this - as if 160mph is not enough in a 20 year old VW!!
