I have been having a look around the local car park, and noted that the exterior styling of the VW golf range seems to age quickly. The MK 3 is only a few years old, yet the design is notably dated. The MK4 is still the current model in the range and is already showing its age.

Its the traditional boxy style of the Golf range an aesthetic dead end?

well, it depends on what car you compare to.

my '93 vr6 seems a lot less dated than an '93 e36 bmw IMO - just sit in both one after another and you'll see what i mean.

but if you compare a '98 vr6 with a bmw of similar age, the golf seems dated.

personally i think the mkIII's don't seem dated.

I personally think all the Golf still look cool. IMO the Focus looks more dated than any car on the road!

Everytime you see a new or concept car (which all tend to look poor), your ideas change and every car will start to seem older. I don't think this necessarily just applies to Golfs. At least our dubs willl grow old gracefully, and they will always look smart.

vw's do grow old gracefully...but i think 60 years down the line, only the mkI will be a classic.

Quite the reverse I think, though it's got harder in recent years.

The Mk1 Golf was around from 1974 to 1983, the mk2 from 1983 to 1992. 9 Years each. I can't think of any other cars from that vintage that lasted that long. Infact, the mk1 cabriolet lasted even longer.

The mk3 looked dated to start with in my opinion, but the mk4 was refreshing, with its new headlamps, class leading interior and cleverly removed seams. VW could have foreseen the rear lamps being old hat on the mk4, but other than that I think the design is still pretty contemporary.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

Personally I love the Golf Mk2 look, I know it is dated and 80s look but I love it more and more. I do like the Mk4 more than the Mk3 but it is such a big car.
Talking about the Focus I hate those rear lights that are high on the rear pillars I hate them!

I don't think there is a car of the same age, made by any other manufacturer, thats looks as cool on the road today as the Mark I and II Golf GTI's still do.

Oh and old Astra's, 306s and Escorts look less dated do they?

I drove a 2003-model BMW 318 with the black interior option the other day and I thought the dash, whilst beautifully laid out, looked really really dated. Wasn't so much the design but the dial graphics etc that looked really eighties.

But the golf is one of the longest running model of any vehicle manufacturer [:^:] I don't think they look all that dated but I think they are tending to look like everything else which is on the road [|)]

When people say GOLF what shape do you think of...

I always think MK2 even before i had mine!

The Golf shape isn't date less but it does age well..

Rear lights like Focus and punto ones date a car quicky or anything which follows the current trend..

Golfs have stuck to a simlar design from day one!

Im doin Transportation Design at uni, as part of the course we have to keep up to date with new models and concepts in the car industry. I agree that a lot of the cars look the same now, for me the new golf has too much of the peugeot 307 bout it, I'll probably like it when I see it in the flesh though (perhaps Im too biased towards vws). My favourite has always been the mk2. I love the look of the cars, especially the GTIs.

The Mk3 Golf came out way back in '91 - about the same time as the Mk5 Escort and the Mk3 Astra. If you think of either of the latter now, it's a rusty old banger, and the shape looks really old hat, whilst if you think of a Mk3 Golf, most of them are still looking pretty good now!

yeah the basic design of the mk3 is over 12 years old now!!! the only thing that looked dated on my '97 model is the headlights and fogs/indicators. once you change them it looks much nicer than the mk4 IMO.
