    Hi All,

I am in the middle of changing my water pump on a Golf Mk3 VR6 (1997).

I have bought a new water pump from the dealership and I'm about to change the old water pump because I have been having some cooling problems. I've flushed the system with clean water and will be changing the hoses for some Samco blue ones.

The problem I thought was that it must have been the water pump, but after removing the pump it seems to be fine. It has a metal impeller which is in perfect condition; the bearing has a minute amount of play but nothing really. The question is:

Do I put the new pump in with a plastic impeller or just put the perfectly OK old pump with metal impeller back in and change the O Ring ?

Any thoughts and view on this would be appreciated !

    Cheers

    Ez

Although I've heard bad things about pumps with plastic impellers I'd be inclined to just use the new one with a new ring obviously.

Make sure you scrape the mounting face with a razor blade and use a little sealant on the new ring.

Euro car parts sell new ones with Metal impellars for 29 pounds!! If you can send the one with the plastic impellar back? I replaced the original plastic impellar pump on my mk4 anniversary as it broke after 44000 miles they are rubbish!!!

Damn I've put sealant on the O Ring .... and put everything back together [:x] .... but it will be a 20 min job to get it all back off .... the car is still on stands and I haven't filled the cooling system yet ! .... So I'll re-do it in the morning !]

I have opted for the new water pump with the plastic impeller seeing as its new and I've enjoyed taking the whole system apart today, been good fun. So If I have to replace it in 30-40k then no problems.

Thanks for that OAK !

I have put my new Samco hoses on [:D] looking awesome; I've cleaned the engine bay, transmission and sides of the engine up a little .... so looking better.

One question though ... the Golf Mk3 VR6 Samco Hose Kit has 7 pipes .... and I have only replaced the 5 main coolant hoses .... I have spent about 20 mins looking for the other 2 hoses that should be replaced by the kit .... any ideas ? Is the A/C loop ? What am I missing here [:s] ? I have 2 hoses left to put on and don't know what I should be replacing ! dowh [:s] ;)

    The hose numbers are = 550 & 551
