is it possible to made a new gasket from a thick paper or something, instead of having to buy a whole repair kit?

Yeah, I've made them from gasket paper before. I've also made my own middle gasket for the carb.
Gasket paper is available on ebay, I used a brand called flexoil.
I've heard that breakfast cereal box card can be used to make gaskets too.

Might do - give it a go, it'll cost you nothing. I'm sceptical about cereal boxes though, not exactly oil proof are they?
