weird gearbox noise

    I have a strange noise coming from my gearbox when in reverse only.(MK3 8v 1997). It's like a loud whine.I have no problems selecting gears either.The car has done 49k.
    Anybody any ideas as to the cause of this?

    iv had this on a few golf mk2's iv had and fixed and it has always bin a problem with the reverse gear in the box unless u want to get it rebuilt it a box change time.i may not be corect but on all iv seen it bin this but im sure youll get some more opinions soon.wierd how it low milage to.not like vw to break that quick :)

    Could try changing the oil, not expensive and might fix your problem?
