Hello peeps, I changed my coolant yesterday and managed to spill loads of it in the engine bay. Everything was running fine though when I left it last night, I ran the temperature up to 90 checked the fan etc all was sweet. Come to start the car for work this morning and nothing. I had to give it loads of throttle to start it, then as soon as I let off it dies. I managed to get it to work by revving the tits off it all the way but it still won't idle properly, and there is absolutely no power until you hit about 3500 rpm. I'd like to know 2 things, 1. Have I just got a bit of damp in there somewhere and it will dry itself out eventually? 2. Is it worth me giving it a good spray round with the old WD40? Its a MK3 8valve agg engine by the way and its never had any problems like this before and it was running completely fine when I left it last night[:^(]
Everywhere. My mate managed to spray most of it with a hose (Jesus Matt do you have the internet built into you or summat, that was a quick response!!!)
its quiet at work at the moment. well, if youve soaked the distributor cap, in the words of the great shania twain, that wont impress the engine too much. basically dry out the ignition bits first. start with the dizzy and then ht leads (where they join the spark plugs) then the ht lead taht joins to the coil. apart from that the coolant change went well ja?
plenty of grease ought to help in the future. the general lack of space is pretty gay though. new bolts cost about 80p from vw though so worth getting those
Its a pretty G12+ pink but so was the old stuff that came out so it was looked after by the previous owner. I thought it best to use that then you don't have to worry about it getting mixed with residual fluid... RE carrier bolts, every time i take any screw/bolt out of my car it gets replaced if I've got one and copper eased before it goes back (except wheel bolts and drain plugs)
i had that when i first got the car. so many things were seized in haha my coolant is pretty pink now, i even got a new expansion tank after the seal in the old one started to pro-lapse
Everything seems pretty good with mine it seems to have been well looked after, it has a good history and I know the previous owner who's a bit anal about servicing cleaning etc. He always took it to a garage though so everything seems to have been done up with an 8V powered ratchet!!! Its just the dreaded tin worm I need to worry about now, but I am slowly turning the tide of the battle 2 more spots in the engine bay (front susp turrets) and I'm rust free!!!
Nope says G12 on the expansion tank on mine. Anyway update... Went out at lunchtime with a towell and some WD40 and it fired up straight away no probs so it must have dried out since I heated it up on the way to work this morning. Happy days
mine was originally blue, it says g11 next to it, but that was all that was available then. g12 is meant to be for alu/steel engines, which is what the abf has... plus it lasts longer
