My next door neighbours having issues with hot starting with his V reg Skoda cabby. Starts fine on cold but has issues with it starting for the first 10 minutes or so ater it has been switched off.

I went to have a look to figure out what engine is in it but I'm very poor with diesels so I had a look at the barcode on the cambelt cover - coudn't read it... checked the service book... not noted, wheres the vehicle data sticker... normally in the boot... damn caddy  We had a look around the back seats but couldn't see anything obvious.

Its normally aspirated; that much is certain, couldn't read the engine number from the block either... What NA engine codes are there for this year?

That is the odd engine that looks similar to the one fitted in 6N Polos. It lies forward unlike the Golf and others.
It looks by the design of the 3 bolt cam cover that it could still be an IDI engine. If that is the case glow plugs may be the problem. TDIs hardly need them but the IDI does, even when warm.

Caddy/Inca are based on those Polos, think 1Y was the only non-ecu SDI engine they did in those anyway

Unusual for the same code to be used for an engine that will have different sump and a few other differences. Certainly looks 1Y ish but at the forward tilted angle.
Can you not get the engine number off the V5?

Could be the temp controller is playing up and not energising the glow plugs when it is warm.

I've been proven wrong, though from a search it suggests it has a Lucas pump! Not heard of that before

did you wate till the glow plug light went out before you started cranking
give that a try and see how you get on
it is probably the immobilizer not letting the fuel pump run

47KWs is not enough power to run a watch, never mind ring bells.

AEF certainly sounds like an engine code to me.
AEY is an 1.9 SDI (direct injection, non turbo) code from a t reg Polo estate. That is the bigger engine bay with the normal orientation of the engine like the golf.
