For anyone wanting to id a 2E bock The best way is to go by the casting part number 048103021B As in the picture below and as said above you have no hole for a crack sensor
the 048 2E ABF AGG and ADY and possible more audi engine codes the 3A start with the part number 053 As point out by mystery man all 2.0 have the bumps on the block ps Chris i'm not a young man and the only one with blood on their hands is you
Similar threads here too from a long while back, looks like these old 8vs have been the center of confusion for many years lol http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?201094-Audi-3A-or-AAD-what-difference http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.p...ngine-specs-305-bhp-from-an-N-A-valver/page27 MelG0 may have have an answer for you... Im sorry to say I couldn't name it for sure(ironically, considering) - I used to have loads of pictures on file and all the differences memorized but one day I just thought to myself, whats the point being that anal and especially so once you take Richard Feynmans quote into account - ''You can know the name of that bird in all the languages of the world, but when youre finished, youll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird'' I would probably try really hard to make out the ID stampings in the usual spots. Brian, Edit, looking closer above the top waterpump bolts it looks to be tall block? Be aware even looking at a painted engine first hand that the crank pickup location can be blanked almost seamlessly with a frost plug(38mm?) making it look like its a non vr pickup early engine too...when in actual fact it could be a later pickup equipped unit. Edit 2, damn youlol, looking at this image which is tagged ABA in the url it looks to be same as yours, http://forum.vwsport.com/pics/data/3089/medium/Oil_Flange_ports_ABA_Block.jpg
Today's picture after a bit of part and paint removal Thanks for your comment so far folks Pen is just a guess Maybe this'll help
Engine number or casting number ? There's possibly an E in the engine number but it's totaly rusted away I had a go at it with a wire brush on a grinder only other thing is a bit of battery acid or wonder wheels Doesn't have the BM3 cast on it like you're posted 2E. Mushy but the casting numbers could be close .
engine number as thats the only real way to be sure i'm sure C will taunt me regardless to whether it's a 2E or not ps i edited me second post
Don't waste my time on farrcebook so he's totaly wasting his time Shame thought he was a nice guy but hay ho you just don't know who's on the other side of the screen
Mike, By "fittings" I believe the mechanic is referring to the oil filter housing and crankcase oil separator. The 1.8 8v original would not have the later oil filter housing or the plastic crankcase oil separator and may not be worth the garage's time to go find one. All things being equal, the short engine is not a problem to mount in the car otherwise.
