    Got a mk1 golf gti. 8 valve GTI K jet from mk2 transplanted in few years ago. Ive never known if they kept the 1800 8 valve normal gearbox or swapped it to a 1.6 MK1 one. Only reason I ask now, is Ive just noticed that mine really does feel loads more torquey and not as long in each gear as other mk2 8 valve GTIs. Just feels shorter.

    At 4000 revs in 5th Im doing just over 80 mph.

    Any ideas off the top of your head?

    Check the code on the flat bit on the bottom of the bellhousing.

    Approx 80mph in 5th at 4000rpm means a final drive of 3.67, and that means you've probably got the 9A tranny from the Mk2's.
    With the 3.94 FD of the late mk1's, you'd be going 77mph at 4000rpm.
    However, it is possibly that your speedo is slightly off (they usually show a little high), so check the tranny code on the bellhousing.

    Once you've found the code you can work out what 'box you have from this web page;

    What you really want is an FM box with a 4.25 final drive! Oh - and a quaiffe thingy if you're feeling rich.
