Any recommendations? It's about due for an oil change. and where's the best place to get a filter from? Are Halfords ones as good as VAG ones?

I just use Quantum silver from GSF as it is what VAG use but is cheaper from GSF.

Arghh... no Halfords filters Darren! :o
Genuine VAG ones with non-return valve thingy are what you want, and Quantum Silver semi-synthetic oil. [:D]

GSF have it at reasonable prices, about a tenner for the oil and 3 for the filter? I did the Polo the other day, my 16v needs doing as well... I should go into business!

I use magnatec 15w/40 and it seems nice. Just thinking it may give me some more protection 'from the turn of the key'!?

Used mobil 1 for over 100,000 miles in my 16v and on inspection at rebuild found very little wear at all.I also used slick 50 on occasion so maybe that helped. After rebuild I have started using synta semi but generally I think that as long as you change oil/filter regulary ie. every 5k and don`t drive it hard until it is warm your engine will stay in good nick.

Use Millers XFS (fully) or XSS (semi) synthitic oil in mine. Seems to make it quieter and runs smoother, if you can understand that. Always use a genuine filter (KNECHT/MANN/VAG).

VW now use Castrol Magnatec as standard at the dealerships.

Just thought I'd add that one to the mix.

I use 10/40 synta silver. Had magnatec in it before and changed the tappets at 90k, probably not related but it`s put me off!

Davs, either of those two oils should be OK for your engine.

Castrol is renowned for being sht - stick to Synta. Gold or silver, your choice.

I wouldn't put fully synthetic in an old engine, its too thin! Stick to semi

Fully synthetic is not always thinner! If you use the Mobil 1 then yes as that is supposed to be 0-40.

Other Fully synthetics are 5W/40 or 5W/50, and from memory the Castrol RS used to be 10W/60

    HTH,

    John.
