    Hi,

I'm slowly putting together my shopping list for a 16vt and I'm looking now at turbos and manifolds.

There seems an awful lot out there and it's ver confusing as to what fits what.

The car is RHD so I don't want any faffing about with stuff from LHD cars that won't fit right. I basically want a no nonsense install.

Firstly what turbos do you recommend for a target fwhp of 280. That will be my absolute ceiling. I won't be wanting more later. Been there done that. It's a daily driver so I want it tractable without buckets of lag, but I also want it to be able to pull out of a junction with reasonable ooomph in the wet without just remaining stationary.;)

Also, I'm on a tight budget so the cheaper the better. I'm quite happy to use a 2nd hand turbo off another car (Cossie, rover turbo etc) so if so, what's a good idea that are cheap and readily available that will fit an off the shelf manifold.

Was thinking of using a VF24 Subaru turbo as it fits my power/lag profile and it's internal gate and I can get one quite cheap but it won't fit the flanges of most manifold as they are designed for garretts and wotnot.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Ta

Garret gt28rs should fit most of the manifolds out there

280whp is more like 320ishBHP. On a 2.0 You will need to achieve 270lbft sustained between 4000-5300 revs to hit 320bhp of output. Is this a 1.8 or 2.0 motor.
Turbos that can flow that amount of air would be GT2871R, T4/T3 hybrid, TD05 (EVO 3), VF23 (Ver 7 STi) All have different flanges as you say you've 'been there' so you should know this.
As for cheap parts...well performance is not really...

Sorry I meant fwhp to mean flywheel horsepower not front wheel horsepower.

    The motor is a 1.8 form a 1990 valver.

Done a lot of fiddling with Subarus, so familiar with the TD and VF turbos but not much else. Have used VF35 (v7 STi), VF24 and 28 (off Classic shape STis) and the TD05-16g and 20g. I can get hold of them easily and cheaply so it would be nice to use one of those but the flanges won't match the mainstream manifolds. Does anyone do a VW manifold for these turbos?

As far as "cheap" goes I was thinkin the 150 to 200 mark I'd be prepared to pay for a 2nd hand VF over say a brand new Garrett at several hunderd more than that (that would pay for my ECU)

Why not start by turning it into a 2.0?

Thought about that and I can't give an honest answer.

I just have this desire to keep it a 1.8

    I presume a shorter stroke 1.8 will be more revable I suppose???[:s]

    There's no replacement for displacement.
