Got a chance at getting some allesio monza's (17's) but there the wrong offset. There vauxhall fitment wich is et35 and vw is et45 if im correct. I wanna go reasonably low so will the offset upset the lowering at all or will it be advisbale to get spacers?

VW fitment is et35, Vauxhall fitment is et49. Vauxhall wheels can be spaced outward to fit VW, if you really want to use spacers you'll need 10-15 mm and longer bolts too as you want to get a full 8 turns on them to be safe.

I remember seeing a chart which showed factory wheel fitments on the Mk2 varying from 32mm to 38mm (not counting the Country which might have had really weird offsets).

If you`re on coilovers you`ll need an et30 at the back to clear the spring platform.

I ran et45 17`s on std suspension, wheels were too far in really, caught reat seatbelt mountings on the inner arch and the fronts rubbed on full lock.

yes it is true. alternatively you can use spacers to push the wheels out a touch to gain clearance.

I`ts true for mk2`s, guess it will be the same for mk3`s (change of offset, not actuall offset). The normal struts are quite skinny (platform above tyre), a coilover with spring running at tyre level is a lot thicker.
