Just wondered where it's best to mount an amp in mark 2 Golf GTI 16V 3 Door?

I've got a Phoenix Gold 4 channel R5.0:4 amp. I will be making up a box for a sub to go in one side of the boot, so I don't want to mount the amp on it, as if I need to remove it, then the amp will be removed as well! If I do it on the opposite side of the boot, then the size of the usable boot area will be quite reduced.

It's nice to be able to show the amp off, but I don't want it getting to scratched & knocked about. I could do something with a false floor, but if I do that, is it best to do the false floor going up to or under the sub box? Of course the other postion where I could put the amp is under the front seat. Will it fit under the front seat of a '91 GTI 16V? Would it be likely to get knocked about much? Is there something that I could put over it to protect it that still allows air to get to it?

    Thanks for any help!

Not got much in there then?! Think I'd rather have the inside side panel in place though!

That's surprising! Wouldn't have thought it would have fitted the panel over all of that! It keeps cool enough with the panel on?! Did you mount the amp on mdf, then fix that to the metalwork that the panel fixes to?

    How about this,

Measure and cut to shape some mdf to fit on 1 side of the boot and find
somewhere to drill a hole to bolt the mdf to the side of the car
(obviously taking care not to drill through the outer skin of the car
or into fuel tanks etc). You can then drill holes in the MDF to feed
the RCAs, power/earth cable, speaker cable, remote cable and put carpet
over the top, I had something exactly the same in my old Pug 206 XSI
and it looked very tidy indeed :)

You could also screw the fuse block on the back of the MDF (if it's thick enough) to keep that all tidy as well.

In front of the suspension turrets in the boot on the left hand side there is space for a reasonable sized piece of wood to be mounted. Previous owner to me had a sheet of MDF fixed there with a cd changer mounted to it. Couple of holes already there from what I remember. Pigbladder's seems the most sensible option tho, everything is nice and hidden then

See the metal strp in the middle, thats the furthest back the trim goes. Theres, loadsa space in there.

might sound like a poo idea but, i mounted my amp actually on the box itself [:s] ,then I made some plugs so that i can quickly unplug it and take it out with ease ;) .and it saves space [:D]
    Just a thought [:$]

Doesn`t it get wet behind the door card? I put mine under the front passenger seat, out of the way.

Cheers pigbladder, think I'll do that!

KeithMac, it shouldn't get wet behind the side panel at the rear of a 3 door should it?! Obviously it could on a 5 door though, but then you wouldn't have the space to fit it because of the window glass!
