Hello, i am building a Corrado race car for hillclimbing and maybe the vag championship. Am currently running cheap coilovers and looking at upgrading to something more serious. The car is under 900kgs and will be running eccentric top mounts and ball joint extenders etc, so the rest will be sorted. Just wondering what are your experiences of coilovers on your race cars.

Have heard good things about both gaz and avo. I am still quite restricted on budget, so any leads to either second hand kit/cheaper new equipment would be useful.

Oh and it's for 16v platform not vr6 mk3 stuff!

AST on my race car. Very happy with the quality and performance.. Gas filled too, which a lot of 'high end' units such as KW are not..

GAZ gold are good for the money with a bit of fettling,, :-)

i was more after peoples experiences of different equipment. i need stiffness adjustment at least as the car will be run on a variety of tracks and surfaces, and will most likley need a variety of springs available aswell

You need to get the car running first! ;)
Have you got the engine out yet?
Lets just get it running and complete, then see about getting it weighed.
You will have to be careful about just buying any old make of suspension. If you are fitting eccentric top mounts under the inner wing you effectively alter the shock length requirement by around an inch as it will lift the car by the thickness of the top mount and spherical bearing.

My dad was helping to build an Astra for the Tour of Mull (he was co-driver). The brand new GAZ Gold Coilovers weren't welded together properly (bottom brackets only tacked on.)

After that I'd think twice before buying GAZ stuff, although I know a lot of guys in the Golf GTI Championship use them.

worth noting, i have a while to get them as theres no way the car will be ready for any of this season.

i would prefer second hand stuff to be honest as 900 odd quid seems a bit much until i know how competitive the car is. i understand the risks of buying second hand stuff but that comes with the price tag.

i have been on the scout for a whileon the usual spots but might start looking abroad to see if anything is out there!

I always go for good quality used stuff if I can find it. I just bought a whole car as a breaker because I wanted the suspension and the quick rack.

Problem solved, now the proud owner of a lovely set of nearly new avo's with 300 and 325lb springs for the excellent price of 200 notes!

Now just to find some eccentric top mounts and ball joint extenders to finish off the package!!!!

Good suspension is a must for competition use in my opinion.
I went for the Race Spec Intrax for my corrado and i can tell you they are sublime
Now i paid 3,600 including custom top mounts but worth every penny.

Any pics of your corrado by the way? be interested in seeing it.
What have you done in relation to weight reduction?
    My raddo weights 903kgs
