which engne ?

hi there i've got a dilema, i drive a mk2 driver which currently has a 1.8 carb(webber) which is about to be replaced with an 8v digifant along with all running gear except for the front brakes which will be 16v items. Now the dilema i have is that the 8v digifant is only a temp swap as it's just a better engine than the current one, i want to go for a lot more power but am stuck for which engine to go for on a lower budget i already have a 16v full loom but want more power but a friend of mine says the vr6 lump wouldn't help it's problems with understeer due it's weight and i can't afford the 1.8T but have heard the passat's have 20V non turbo lump in some but don't know it's power output can anyone make any surgestions or tips. cheers
