with flashguns (i was told by an old photography tutor of mine so an independent source) it is usually better to buy the same brand so go for a canon flasgun as you dont always have the same communication with the camera....... quite how true that is i dont know but my canon 430 ex II and 580 ex work fantasticly with my old Canon 400D so would recomend buying one of those....

I was told the same by the guy in the shop. I use a Nikon body so will have to go with the SB series.

I`ve always figured the same too, and managed to pick up a Speedlite 550ex to go with my 450D for just 145 on eBay.

A diffuser is a must too (only a few quid on the bay too.)

Very pleased with the results so far.

OK thanks for that, I'll see how much I can get a Canon one for

Reviews look good on the Nissin one though!

I cant fault a Nissin one, however thats said a proper Canon Speedlight will do wonders and I guess I am a brand name whore when it comes to Canon.... Experience has taught me that.

Well I'd rather not fork out twice for one if I make a mistake the first time, so this is really helpful - thanks!

Stick to the Canon one - you'll only wish you had later on.

Stu - beautiful pic with bounced flash - did you use a reflector too?

Nope, no reflector. I don`t really do enough portrait stuff at the moment to justify getting one, but I dare say I`ll end up with one at sometime anyway.

Reflectors are cheap as chips (esp compared with buying flash guns) or you can make your own. Until I got a set, I used some very cheap but large plastic gold place mats from Wilkos, which did the job well, being gold on one side and white on the other.

I think you must all have shares in Canon ;)

Anyway, you've convinced me to go for a Canon - anyone want to sell one?

Any advice on equipment gratefully received, as I'm only just starting out really, and only have a camera and two lenses so far [:^(]

430EX II will get the job done, although the 580EX II has more features and is a lot nicer to use. Second hand Mk1 versions of those above might be worth a look, as is the 550EX.

Avoid anything suffixed with "EZ" as these will only work satisfactoraly as slaves or on film cameras.

If you're looking at current models it's potentially worth spunking the extra on a new one, since S/H items often aren't a whole lot cheaper anyway...

go for a new one of everything and always save that little bit longer and get the more expensive version..... there will be cheaper ones but the will not be as good. you cannot put a price on the pictures taken through good glass, there is a noticeable quality difference.....

as for your flash get the 580ex mk II, such a good flash gun, so much better than the 430ex models. and over time look for flash gun soft boxes and a wireless reciever cdan make amazing images.....

No - keep your cars and sell a kidney ;)

Sound advice given above. Sometimes it's just not worth compromising on cheaper stuff and you'll usually end up wishing you had paid the extra for the proper gear.

And be grateful if you are a Canon owner. I've got Nikon gear and comparable Nikon gear is always more expensive than Canon stuff.

That's why I've got both kidneys on eBay at the moment ........
