Hello, I've bought a mk1 gti 1800 and have been told it has a mk2 engine in it. Is there any way of telling if this is true? Also the syncro has gone in first and second, so looking to replace, Which gearbox's fit, pressuming it is a mk2 engine and wheres the best place to get them from?

    Cheers,

    Mark

The engine number is the best bet for seeing what it really is. Early mk2s, ie the K-Jet ones, are an EV I think...

The gearoxes fit from most cars provided they are of the 020 type, ie most 1.5 1.6 1.8 or 2.0 cars in mk1 2 & 3 golfs jettas (some mk3 cars will have a cable change box, dont want that) and mk1 and 2 Sciroccos, caddies, cabbies, maestros montegos and vans (only certain ones, 1.3 and 1.6 carb ones not the turbos, late 1.6 or 2.0 carb and EFI)

Some have small drive shaft flanges but you can swap them from your box to match if you have the big ones and some have a different reverse switch, if you have the gearchange indicator on the dash you might want to get the multiplug type to keep it original. If you get a 16v box then use a 16v clutch as the inputshaft is different.

Have a search for some more detailed info, you'll find lots of wisdom spoken by Hotgolf, Broke and a few other well informed indiviuals, believe them not me....

Ignore mk3 Golfs/Ventos if you're not sure. Only certain ones have the
right box for you whereas all mk2s with a 1.6 or 1.8 engine will have a
    box that fits.

also get the code from the bottom of the bell housing to see what ratios it has, some can blunt the performance in someways.

proably best ot ignore the meastro/montego boxes too... you might end up with a honda box if the breaker doesnt know (they dont say VW on them anywhere)
