I want to change the fluid in my 86 16v. Which fluid should i use? Bear in mind i do have the common 2nd synchro crunch. Cheers chaps!
Don't go for the cheapest/most readily available oil that seems to meet the spec. I did, thinking, "well it's got to be better than the oil that's been in there for sixteen years!" Er, wrong. I bought "Comma 75W90 GL4", and it is no better, and poss. a little worse than what was in there already, in terms of engaging 1st/2nd gears when cold. Don't think the genuine VW stuff is particularly expensive, and the Redline MTL isn't really a huge amount of money.
I'd have to strongly recommend the millers oils stuff thats supplied to golf race series competitors......its so so smooth, i didnt ever need to bother with clutch for 3rd to 4th and vice versa changes. was awesome. Use redline in my mr2, and its perfectly good though...obv thats not a direct comparison tho
Use the cheapo VW stuff first (5 a Ltr), run it for a bit then change to redline MT90 (not MTL - for 020 boxes only)
