Which Gearbox fluid to use.

    I want to change the fluid in my 86 16v.

    Which fluid should i use?


    Bear in mind i do have the common 2nd synchro crunch.

    or any good quality SAE80 don't use the common 80/90 it's too thick

    Don't go for the cheapest/most readily available oil that seems to meet the spec.

    I did, thinking, "well it's got to be better than the oil that's been in there for sixteen years!"

    Er, wrong. I bought "Comma 75W90 GL4", and it is no better, and poss. a little worse than what was in there already, in terms of engaging 1st/2nd gears when cold.

    Don't think the genuine VW stuff is particularly expensive, and the Redline MTL isn't really a huge amount of money.

    I'd have to strongly recommend the millers oils stuff thats supplied to golf race series competitors......its so so smooth, i didnt ever need to bother with clutch for 3rd to 4th and vice versa changes. was awesome.

    Use redline in my mr2, and its perfectly good though...obv thats not a direct comparison tho

    Use the cheapo VW stuff first (5 a Ltr), run it for a bit then change to redline MT90 (not MTL - for 020 boxes only)
