hi all,i want to change my gearbox oil at the weekend but all the good branded ones like redline or miller are no stockists in my area and mail order is too much hassle and time are there any others that will be just as good readily available like mobil1 or castrol or the like
probably does. no one has said yet why fully synth would be any better. the normal gearbox oil doesnt appear to feature on the service schedule to be changed at any time
You should get Redline because everyone actually notices a difference compared to other oils where you don't! And on old VW gearboxes with slightly tired synchromesh the differences can be quite apparent When I first put synthetic mobil into one of my GTis I was very disappointed not to notice any improvement at all
Yep, if you want to see the difference buy some VAG oil (very cheap now) and do a change, you may notice a small difference, drive for a week then change again for MTL, that way you'll get a good flush too.
Turbobits stock Redline oils You need MTL for 020 boxes, and MT90 for 02a boxes It helped cold shifting on my worn GTI box a great deal, but my 2nd synchro was too far gone for it to be of any help. It has been known to solve the 2nd crunch on some boxes though!
Gents, How much oil does one need to obtain to completely fill an 020 or 02A gearbox? Cheers for posting the above link, Rubjonny. I'll be ordering some oil from them tonight once I know how much to get. Thanks Trev
I`m sure a `quart` means a quarter of a gallon. Therefore a quart is just a little over a litre. Could be wrong though! 2 litres is the right amount for filling a dry box.
A US quart is just under a litre 2 bottles of MTL is enough for the job, its 2litres dry fill but since you can never get it all out you always need a bit less. Matt82: The 020 & 02a have different internals so require different oils, I can't remember exactly why though, something to do with the syncromeshes not liking MTL IIRC.
After a bit of research the 02a just needs a different weight oil is all, MTL is 75W80W GL-4, and MT90 is 75W90W GL-4
i might source a change in oil. im certain i remember checking the weight of the oil. the old cans may be back home so ill see. ill check my owner's book when i get home this weekend. ill get the recommended weight and fully synth, most likely millers if i can find it cos i wont have to pay postage on that lol
