i'm going to look at a mk1 golf gti with 1.8/2.0L 16v in it at the weekend, but its only got a 4-speed box mated up, which other vw gearboxes could i use to change it into a 5-speed

pretty much any MK2 5 speed I recon, but you'll need to get the right flywheel/clutch combo.

I bet the reason it has a 4 speed box is because they couldn't be bothered to cut off and move the gearbox mount which you need to do to fit a 5 speed.

Could have I guess, I recon one from a MK3 should fit no worries. Only thing is you might need different driveshafts? I think MK2 items are what you need, but don't quote me on that!
