Been looking around for a while for a nice black MK3 but I've not found what I wanted. I've dug into the savings and decided a MK4 is just about within my grasp. So the question is which version should I go for? As far I see it there is either the 1.8T or the 1.8T 20v, the 2.0 GTI and V5 I'm not really fussed about. With the wedge I've got to spend I'm looking at one with around 70K miles so my pile of questions are:

-Which is the best 1.8T? standard or 20v?
    -Are they reliable after 70-80K?
-Is there anything I should look out for on these particular models?
    -Does the 20v eat fuel?
-When were the two 1.8T models released? or which one came first?

Any info at all welcome, cheers....

    all 1.8T's are 20v.
Dont forget the 150 TDI. great engine.

2.0 is slooow and v5 munches fuel.

V64mo is great but more fuel and more

Doohhhhh, school boy error.......so what's this 1.8T 20v '180 bhp' I've seen quoted then? Was it the Anniversary edition? If it was how can you tell if a car is a standard 150bhp or an Anniversary 180bhp? They look identical on the photo's and I don't want to get duped into buying the lesser car if I can afford a 180......btw, would love a 150TDI, they just go for too much money.

The later ones were 180bhp IIRC but I'm not sure when exactly. The Anniversary was definitely 180bhp.

    There was also a 1.8 non-turbo too.

there is quite a few threads about the mk4 gti. check the engine code to determine exactly what model it is. The 1.8T mk4 was released with 150bhp, but certain engines (AUM for example) have an upgraded turbo which is a down tuned version of the anniversary turbo with 180bhp (AUQ engine code). There were normal (ie not anni models) with 180bhp, but you would have to check the engine code to be sure as im pretty sure they look identical. the actual anniversary mk4s are easy to spot though.

The mk4s with the upgarded turbos (KO3S) and the 180bhp as standard, came out later (2001?).

ive proberbly just confused you more but dont even look at a 1.8 non turbo, waste of time imo.
the only mk4 gti u should really consider is the 1.8T or possibly the 2.0 (non turbo).

I thought the 1.8 non turbo was OK and the 2.0 non turbo was ****e.

If you were planning on a remap either the 150 or the 180 would give you close to 200bhp. You get better seats in the 150's, big fat Recaros.

The Mk4 gti 180 is far from identical to the Anni: The Anni is bodykitted on 18s, the gti180 looks like all other mk4s.

To distinguish the cars, and any mk4 for that matter, use the engine code.

The very cheapest 150 GTTDIs are now itro 5-6K

Not exactly sure either, but suspect around same time as Bora180, in 2003.

By 'down tuned' do you mean they've got 150bhp but have an uprated turbo or they have 180bhp with a turbo capable of much more?

Is there a definitive list anywhere showing all the engine codes and which engines they relate to including bhp?
