    Hello all,

need a bit of advice -- which VAG oil pump should i install in an Audi 3A "Bubble Block"?

The engine lube system includes oil jets for each piston and hydraulic tappets -- it's a "fast road" spec (i.e. max revs < 6000)

    Any info much appreciated !

    cheers, Will

This thread should help you figure out what's best.

There are different sizes of gears in oil pumps, and there are believed to be different rated pressure relief valves.

First thing to do is establish which size pump the 3A ran originally (do you have the old one?). If so, use that thread to compare.

Next thing is to work out what you're constrained with because of the need for a distributor drive

Next thing is to acknowledge that a 16v or 20v pump should require more flow due to the number of tappets to fill and additional oil travel around the head.

Effectively, with an engine as fast road spec, and not knowing anything about the release valve ratings (no way of knowing, even with the investigation work done) I'd be quite confortable fitting a standard 3A pump.

I used the original 3A pump but removed the pick-up tube/pipe and replaced it with a standard 8v one. Here's my thread over on the Caddy forum

Check out post #7 for a good picture of the orignal 3A pump and an 8v pump

Nice, cheers for that. Obviously it shows the waisted stem which the 2-litres generally have.

Do you have a pic from the other side? I'd be able to see from the casing whether it has 30mm or 36mm gears inside it you see.

Hmmm, pics just not close enough to make a confident call, unfortunately.

    This is the ideal pic:

The two housings to the left have 30mm tall gears in them, whereas the one on the right has 36mm. The casting shows the difference in internal size.

    Ignore the driveshafts.

My 3a is being built at the moment (with a rotrex charger admittedly) using a g60 pump if this helps.
