    Hi,
was looking to flush out the oil system before putting in a new oil and filter -
I'd like to keep the oil supply to the turbo as well maintaind as possible before blocking the EGR, cleaning the intercooler and remapping.

the GSF flushing oil, I was told there, is not good for the TDi s -
they reomended to go direct to VW...?

as the 505 grade oil GSF as trying to sell me was 30 for 5L it seemed a fush would be good value! [:D]

    so....
    - any ideas on the best flushing treatment for a 97 AHU TDi (90Hp, 180k on the clock!...)
    - is the GSF oil worth it? ( FUCHS SUPERSYN PLUS 5W40 ) 505.00 spec oil
it is listed as for PD engines - off to see what else they got...

    many thanks,
    P)

tbh I wouldnt, Just change the oil every 5k miles with VW oil (its cheaper than gsf btw and it oem so is perfect) you arent pushing max power with a old skool 90bhp motor so dont worry too much.

If it were me i'd buy 2 filters then just go buy 5 ltrs of Asda engine oil + 500ml of ATF fluid
Swap oil and filter, bung ATF in too,do 100 miles then change oil agin with the good stuff :-)
    Job's a goodun.

im not a fan of the ATF trick, not on diesels with a turbo, tbh if you change the oil every 5k use good oil it will be fine. diesel oil has lots of cleaners in it anyway and over a couple of oil changes it will clean the insides out. you can go too far with the cleaning and flush out any little bits that maybe sat in seals etc and find you cause far more problems that you fix.

I forgot to add that Asda oil is less than a fiver (cheaper than diesel)

AHU is not a PD engine so oil is not that critical...

Flushes are ok but can cause issues on an old engine that's never been flushed... as above I'd just use a cheap oil as a flush then start doing 5k oil changes.

Had a look at the oil on offer at VW dealer...

    Synta RED - 15W 40 - (D / turbo D) 505.00 spec (17 - 5L)
    Synta SILVER - 10W 40 - (semi-synth) 505.00 spec (20 - 5L)

I guess the Silver is what I used to put in my MK2 8V, it was listed for petrol and diesel / TD engines....

    so, the question is...
    the specialist D/TD 15W 40 Red
    OR
    the thinner 10W 40 Silver

(I do get the tappety sound for 3-4 secs after cold start BTW)

I was consedering it but it's nearly twice the price of the Synta Silver at VW
in i low mileage engine I would consider but mine has done 180K
(better than other vecicles I've had with 70-odd-K though!)

maybe if the PD oil is the longlife one it'd be worth it though

quantum pd oil is cheap, you dont need the long life 3 stuff, just the normal 10-40 pd oil. change every 5k miles or so
