I'm in the process of rebuilding the 020 gearbox on my mk1 golf and wanted to know what performance oil people recommend? It's a synchromesh box with a quaife diff. I normally use Hypoid GL5 75W90 for no reason other than the manual says so.

    I have seen:

    - Red line MTL
    - Red line MTL NS (Non limited slip)
    - Motul 300 Race fully sythn
    - Fuchs (ex Silkolene) Race Syn 5
    - Valvoline Synth

    What do you guys think?

Castrol B373 for me, as thats what I use in my 020/Quaffe. For me its easier to keep a stock of it as it is intented for plated diff cars also. Semi sensible price too

Motul every time. All day everyday.

The gearbox in my race car has been great (considering I found it at the end of a mates garden full of water. Once I emptied and flushed it out and filled it with ****e oil, ran it for 10 mins and filled it with Motul, it's never missed a beat for 3 seasons! No crunches in any gear! :-) )

Thanks Guys! I will bear that in mind for next time. I ended up ordering Red line Lightweight yesterday instead. See how it goes.

P.S. Henry, is that the expensive 45 per litre Motul stuff or Motul 300?

Motul 300v chrono gear stuff from memory!? I've heard really good things about standard GM syncro stuff on Vortex recently.. they love it!
