Now we have moved down to Kent I have tried a couple of garages, but have now found an excellent specialist, Youngs VW Garage at Wrotham. The owner Nick took my car out for a spin and said that it drove excellently for a MK2 GTi :)

He did mention that he thought there was a lot of movement in the front engine mount. I told him the engine was uprated and putting out 132BHP (Stealth RR).

Come to think of it, when I have been driving the car on the motorway and then booting it there occasionally seems to be a weird sensation like the engine is rocking??[:s]

He suggested that I needed a stronger front mount such as a Vibratechnics?

I have read mixed things on these and they are also pricey!! I don't want to lose any refinement or get extra vibration in the cabin?

What are the other options? I guess a 16v front mount should be stronger than an 8 valve and designed to cope with 137BHP? I've read that the Golf Mk2 diesel front mounts are strong, but where would I get a new one of those without paying crazy money?

    Any suggestions guys and gals??

    cheers Alpenweiss2 :):)

if your after refinement then dont bother with the solid alloy types available. they work a treat and I've ran them on 2 golfs now but they cause a lot of vibration at idle.

i have one of duff's solid front mounts and the only extra vibes is when engine is cold and running lumpy, once warmed up is as smooth as you like, and far cheaper than the vibratechnics mount, i can really recomend them, easiest and best upgrade i have ever done on my car!

...to retain some refinement which i think is what you want you coud try a G60 rear, mk2 1.3 solid rubber gearbox mount with a non hydraulic front mount(16v/G60?)

I run those 2 rears with a vibratechnic front....with a polybushed front end, eibach bars and a 272cam putting out 138bhp @ Stealth there is some vibration in the cabin

    Hi timo16v!!

Would it be okay just to replace the front mount with a 16v/G60 and leave the gearbox and rear mount. I think these are okay to be honest, it's just the front one that is worn?

Anyone know the part number for the non hydraulic 16v/G60 front mount and if I don't buy VAG, which is the the best pattern part?

    Cheers Alpenweiss2

bonded rubber 1.3 front and gearbox, 16v/g60 rear is the stiffest oem combo. solid front if that isnt stiff enough for you!

as above they can result in vibration but it comes down to toher factors i think. my mates mk2 was really bad but he had coilovers, whereas mine isnt too bad. both of them were abf conversions done by me with same box and rear mounts so i can only assume it was down to the coilovers being stiffer

Well, I have a mk2 1.8T that was putting out about 260/280hp (estimate) and no stripped bolts/threads what so ever on a solid front mount.

As jonny said also....the 2 rears as jonny and myself mentioned with the bonded rubber 1.3 front jobbie as jonny mentioned...the 1.3 jobbies are cheap too:)

no problem just doing the front fella...although once you change the front you may find the rears will start deteriorating

I've had Vibratechnics front mounts before and I think they are a bit too pricey - I'm just as happy with the solid rubber 1.3/16v front mount I have on now. Changing the rear mount makes a difference as these get loose with age and cause the other mounts to move about a lot, but they can be a pain to change.

I've also had a bugpack rear engine mount insert before, which basically fills the gaps in the rear mount, this cuts down almost all movement but gives a lot of vibration! did run it for 3 years on the road though so couldn't have been that bad.

I've had one on my race car for 2 full seasons now without an issue & launches don't get any harder than a standing start of a championship race!
