Doesnt sound very good, pretty sure its not the gearbox as it does it when out of gear, when i rev the engine it will whistle, not always though and its usually when its cold... got a feeling it could be anything, but any ideas lol? cheers.
Just been through this prob myself. Couldn't trace it at first, being intermittant, thought it was a split vacuum hose. Turned out to be the tensioner pulley bearing for the cambelt.
Sorry its a Mk2 GTi (8v Digifant) thanks Bushy, theres one idea... and yeah it is very intermittent, sometimes it will sound fine, the next it will whistle.. and more often than not it will get louder the higher through the rev range until it stops.
