Back in the day you could buy sub boxes that fitted in the recess behind you rear wheel arch.

I used to laugh about them being uncool and what did i need boot space for anyway.
    Now im eating those words!

anyone know where i can get one or two from?

I think there is something about those in the 'Max Power' book for golfs,

From memory it shows you how to make them as well

Unfortunatley I dont have that book anymore, I burnt it.........

    i built one....
    in extreme basics...
just strip the side carpet out...
masking tape several layers over the whole area...
lay some glass fibre matting down and saturate with glass fibre resin (halfords or cfs.co.uk or .com)
do this over the area.. which will be the back of the box....in layers until its 4-5mm thick.
make a front for the box out of mdf and mould this to the backplate with fibreglass paste. the top of the box can be done by stretching some absorbent material (t-shirt) over the space...stapling it to make it tight.
then saturate that with GF resin and build up some layers using GF matting as before.
then seal the box inside with thr liquid GF resin.
    Job done.
