Fitted an 02J shifter mech (on the gearbox) to an 02A gearbox???
I'm also talking about the later 02J box not the earlier one with 02A cables.
I ask as i'm a bit stuck with 02J ratio's (read only have 2 boxes with the same ratio's lol)but am over run with 02A boxes.
The 02A shifter is a non starter due to the worse than bad change, swapping ratio's between the boxes COULD be an option but it would be a whole lot easier to just change the box and shifter on the top for me as i'd have to get someone else to swap cogs for me.
Just want to know if its worth keeping these boxes or just cash them in and stick to what i have TBH.

I've fitted an 02A shifter mech to an 02J box in the past is 10 min job. Just unbolt the top and bottom parts of the mech and swap them straight over.

    Cheer's for the reply!
Well if it fits straight in that way round it should be the same the other way round right?
Cool! time to think about ratio's again (with a good shift lol)

Great project you have by the way!

    Cheers dude

If you do swap the linkage over you have to swap the lower part as well as the tower.
It sits under the tower and is held in with two 13mm bolts (on the 02J has a VW cast into it  )

The design of how the gear change cables attach to the tower is the main change. There is also a big weight on the 02J tower that makes the shifts smoother.

I've fitted an 02j tower onto an 02a box.

Used a new Audi TT short shift weight with the pin type cable end (comes with the weight 25 quid from Audi) and a Golf ball type end gate control lever.

Its on my Jetta track car no issues at all, took 20 mins to fit.

I've no ideas what it was like before, the Jetta had an 020 box with rod shift, my 02a CRU box came out of a Passat, had the tower fitted then into the track car. Has an awsome snick from the shifter and you change gear.

    o2a tower in box.
