Like the title says why did they make 150BHP mk4 Turbo golfs and some 180BHP?? Where they special editions, anniversary models or an option ECT?? I was at VW yesterday and I had a ****** of a salesman who knew jack!!! By the way I was looking at a silver 2.8 4motion in 2 door. Testing it Sun. Going to another VW next week to test the turbo model.
I think the 180 T engine came later and featured only in the anniversary mkIV Golf (in VW's). Seat and audi use them though- the seat leon cupra and lower-spec TT(?). But yes, in the mkIV it was just the limited edition. They also made the 225hp based on the same engine, but this wasn;t put in a VW, only in audis and seats- hell they might even be in Skodas!? Enjoy your testdrive! Not having to pay for fuelling a VR6 is a luxury!
most 1.8t gtis were 150ps Nope - Anniversary models AND some gti's had 180ps the difference is like any other higher spec, you're given the choice, and to pay more for it......
180 bhp turbo mk4s were only anniversary and factory order mk4's from 51plate onwards i think. there was only one 180 turbo engine and the engine code was AUQ. but there were a few variants of the 150 engine codes AUM, AGR and another couple i cant quite remember! but the difference is an uprated turbo and a few changed values in the ecu. the v6 4motions are fast and fun but get boring after a while, driven a few. but superb in the rain with ESP off!!!!!
The 180PS Golf As said above in many posts, VW did the 25th Anniversary with the 180PS engine and then after that decided to let us all buy a GTi with the same engine but not the special edition version. Mine's an AUQ with the 180PS engine and yes it does have a K03s turbo. Salesman asked how come i'd seen this on offer, but it was just in teh sales list with all the rest of em! psi was upped to about 12psi i think (was the 150 about 8psi standard?) without a remap. Front brakes where also upped to 312mm, the same as on the Anni (but i think the Anni's also had brembo calipers). Its also 6 speed like the Anni, so yes a fair few changes. Its kind of weird with folks putting posts up saying "nah 180's where only Anni's". Dont they check first? Doh
I reckon VW decided to give the GTI more power to revitalise it as the model got older and to keep up with the power offered by the competition. i.e: Peugeot 206 gti 180 came out 2000/2001
