Download Open Office for nothing, pretty much the same as Excel (word ect), other than some fairly complex functions and some of the interface. Can save spreadsheet as an Excel file for use by others.

professional versions of business software is always expensive because it is used to make companies money

e.g. a 3D CAD license could be 13K which sounds a lot but if it's used to design a building / part of a moon rocket / aircraft

    makes the company using it

student versions are a "strictly not for business use", use it to learn & not make money and you have the software for cheap cheap

Microsoft also have a home use program that they do with a lot of large corporates, through work i can get a license for the use of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook for 10 quid.

Crikey. Twenty years ago, ME10 was 10,000 per seat.

ME10 is the best 2D CAD in the World. I know, because, I wrote the original algorithms!

Excel is very sad accountant software, written by accountants, for accountants. In the real world, real people don't use Excel.

    They use MathCAD or similar!

I dunno, a hell of alot of people use Excel. I for one use it on a daily basis.

As others have said though, open office is a good alternative for free. And if you have an .ac.uk adress then' the ultimate steal' is a good bet too.

may be true but for the last 2 years it was the only compatable/available software of its type that I could use at college, same went for star ccm+ and solid works.

incidentally if you have a .ac.uk email you can order discount software from studica.co.uk and the 2010 student version of solidworks should be down to about 40ish by now, I only paid 90 when it was first relased!

Virtually every office in the world will have a copy of Excel on a machine within it, somewhere.
Most of them will have it on every machine.
I'm not an accountant, and I use it. My Mrs isn't one either, and she uses it.
In fact, every person I know uses it even if it's just once annually to do a Tax Return.

And if you think Excel is expensive, try sticking your hand in your pocket for Adobe Photoshop... :p

    WTF is MathCAD?
